Clinical Education and ALS Management
The Les Turner ALS Center at Northwestern Medicine team recently published a manuscript on the multidisciplinary care of patients living with ALS.
Among the many findings was that early initiation of noninvasive ventilation improves quality of life and prolongs survival, and early implementation of airway clearance techniques in patients with bulbar ALS may improve noninvasive ventilation compliance and prevent respiratory infections.
“Our team works very hard to support ALS patients and their families using a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach,” said Jonathan Brent, MD, co-author of the paper and member of the Center’s Lois Insolia ALS Clinic. “This review highlights key management problems we tackle daily in the clinic by incorporating evidence-based treatments with our center’s practical experience.”
