On what would be the late Sam Shepard’s Diamond Jubilee birthday—Mon., Nov. 5, 2018—actors Reilly Downes and Paul McComas kick off the 3-night run of a multi-arts benefit show based around the acclaimed Fort Sheridan–born playwright/actor’s riveting, tragicomic 1983 one-act, Fool for Love.
The 80-minute show starts with the premiere of Just These Dinosaurs, a short film by McComas and Spencer Parks, adapted from Shepard’s 1982 collection Motel Chronicles.
Next, guitarist/vocalist Downes and bassist/vocalist McComas perform a set of original “love-foolish” tunes, plus several haunting Western songs that Shepard’s sister Sandy Rogers wrote for Robert Altman’s 1985 Fool for Love feature film.
Then comes McComas’ propulsive two-person adaptation, co-directed by Downes, of Fool for Love, which garnered Shepard a 1983 Obie Award for Best New American Play.
