Each person living with ALS may experience their own unique set of challenges that may change over time when it comes to achieving adequate nutrition and maintaining their weight. This webinar will discuss various ways to maintain good nutrition through the foods you consume\, the way you prepare your meals\, how you stay hydrated and the additional support you may need when you are unable to eat enough to meet your body’s needs. \nAbout the Presenters: Brittany Hitson (pictured left) is an Alabama native who moved to Chicago in 2018. She received a Bachelor’s of Science in Nutrition/Dietetics with a Minor in Business from Auburn University in 2015 and then went on to obtain her Master’s of Science in Clinical Nutrition from the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she also completed her dietetic internship in 2016. She is currently working as an inpatient Clinical Dietitian at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and provides support to: general medicine\, surgical/urological services and the neonatal intensive care unit\, as well as the Lois Insolia ALS Clinic at the Les Turner ALS Center. She has been a part of the ALS Clinic Team since 2020 and also assists with inpatient ALS G-tube admissions. \nDominique Kosk (pictured right) was born and raised on the north side of Chicago. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics from Dominican University and completed her dietetic internship at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers. She completed a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Epidemiology at Loyola University Chicago. Dominique has a certificate in nutrition support and is currently working at Northwestern Memorial Hospital as an inpatient Advanced Clinical Dietitian in the intensive care unit. She is one of two dietitians in the Lois Insolia ALS Clinic at the Les Turner ALS Center at Northwestern Medicine\, providing nutrition care and counseling for people living with ALS since 2016. \nSign up to attend the July webinar here!

SUMMARY:World's Longest Turkey Trot
DESCRIPTION:Years ago\, ultra marathoner Alfredo Perro said to his friend Scott Kummer that he wanted to run one last 100-mile race before the end of the year. Scott and Alfredo decided to simply run from the Chicago «Bean» to the city of Milwaukee for a roughly 100-mile turkey trot on Black Friday. They called it the “World’s Longest Turkey Trot.” \nSoon after\, Alfredo was diagnosed with ALS and lost his battle with the disease in November of 2015. Every year\, runners have carried on Alfredo’s tradition in his honor. \nThis year\, the Turkey Trot will be both virtual and in-person. You can sign-up or donate here! \nFrom November 26-28\, participants will run as many miles as possible while raising awareness and money for ALS.

Dr. Kvarnberg\, Clinic Director of the ALS Interdisciplinary Clinic at Edward Hines\, Jr. VA Hospital will provide an overview of the link between military service and the approach that the VA takes in caring for veterans. Dr. Kvarnberg will discuss VA benefits available to those impacted by ALS\, and share information about his clinic. This webinar will provide useful information to veterans with ALS and their caregivers wanting to know more about: \n\nClinical care and everything ordered by a VA doctor or clinician\nMedications\, supplies from pharmacy\nHome Health Care\nPhysical Therapy\nOccupational Therapy\nSpeech Therapy\nHospice & Palliative Care\nSocial Work\nMental Health\nDurable Medical Equipment\n\nAbout the Speakers: \nDr. Kvarnberg (left) and Robert Ives (right) \nDr. Kvarnberg received his medical degree from Rush University in 2003. As a medical student\, he was the recipient of a Navy Health Professional Scholarship which led him to serve four years of active duty as a Navy physician and included two deployments to Iraq with the Marines. He then received his neurology residency and neuromuscular fellowship training at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has worked at the Hines VA Hospital since 2012 seeing veterans with general neurology complaints and complicated neuromuscular problems. He has been the Clinic Director of the Hines VA ALS Interdisciplinary clinic since he started it in 2013. The clinic sees approximately 12 patients per month in a weekly half-day of clinic. Since June 2021\, he has accepted the role as the Acting Chief of the Neurology Service at Hines. In his free time\, he is an avid hiker and regularly trains in aikido. \nRobert Ives\, a veteran living with ALS\, was diagnosed in 2014. As an engineer and business owner\, Bob never backed down from a challenge. His tenacity was formed as a young lieutenant in the Army during the building of the Berlin Wall and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Both of these traits have served him well since his diagnosis. DESCRIPTION:The 21st Annual Lew Blond Memorial 5K Run/Walk\, 1 Mile Run will take place on Saturday\, May 21 at Maple School\, 2370 Shermer Road\, Northbrook\, IL. The 5K takes place at 8:00 am. The 1 Mile Run begins at 9:00 a.m.\, and the new Little Lew 50-yard dash (for ages 6 and under) begins at 9:30 a.m. This year other new additions to the event include an online silent auction and a «Smile Mile» at Mile 2\, sponsored by Dentistry For Kids\, Ltd.\, where a photographer will be taking photos and post them on the Lew Blond Run’s Instagram. \nDistrict 30 has collaborated with the Lew Blond Memorial 5K Organization\, a non-profit organization\, to host the 5K and 1 mile run for the past 20 years. The Lew Blond Memorial 5K Run/Walk is held to honor Lew Blond\, a Maple School teacher who passed away from Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS) in February 2000. He was an exceptional and dedicated educator of the applied arts and was revered and cherished by his students\, his colleagues\, and the parents of the children he served. Lew Blond’s family has attended and helped support this race since its inception. \nThe Lew Blond Run Board of Directors appreciates everyone’s continued support of this fundraising event\, which benefits ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) research through the Les Turner ALS Foundation\, supports high school scholarships at Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South High Schools\, and special District 30 projects.
